The resulting artworks are studied in the professional fields of art criticism and the history of art. The Department of Fine Art supports the IVS Gallery which has in the past successfully organized reputable national and international art exhibitions. The department has also hosted artist residencies in collaboration with Vasl Artists’ Collective. As part of the Talking Art Series, eminent artists regularly visit as special guests for seminars, talks, tutorials and workshops. The Department of Fine Art has recently introduced an internship programme during the summer break for students in semester five.

Extreme Formalism is the view that all aesthetic properties of art are formal . Philosophers almost universally reject this view and hold that the properties and aesthetics of art extend beyond materials, techniques, and form. Unfortunately, there is little consensus on terminology for these informal properties. Some authors refer to subject matter and content – i.e., denotations and connotations – while others prefer terms like meaning and significance. The more recent and specific sense of the word art as an abbreviation for creative art or fine art emerged in the early 17th century.
